On Divination and Synchronicity: The Psychology of Meaningful Chance. Originally Presented As Lectures at the C.G. Jung Institute, Zurich
Published in Paperback by Inner City Books (December, 1980)
Author: Marie-Louise von Franz
Average review score:

Synchronize this!
This book is incredible.

It's presented in the format of the original lectures that it was based on (Sometimes that means she repeats important points for the audience's memory, but it never hurts, and its the only stylistic oddity).

Content-wise it is mind-blowing. I like Marie Louise Von Franz so much because she takes all these obtuse ideas that Jung had, and gets them to make so much sense and have such a real life and personality and weight to them, which is often hard to get by just reading the original material straight from the horses mouth (Jung being the horse, in this case).

This is a great book about synchronicity. It spends a whole lot of time talking about integers and chance and stuff like that.

One God or Many?: Concepts of Divinity in the Ancient World (Transactions of the Casco Bay Assyriological Institute, 1)
Published in Paperback by Capital Decisions Ltd (October, 2000)
Author: Barbara N. Porter
Average review score:

One God or Many? is Not About Canaanite Religion!
As the editor and one of the contributors to this volume, I wanted to make it clear that the book is not about Canaanite religion! One God or Many? is the result of a conference that explored the religions of ancient Assyria, Egypt, Greece, and Israel, focusing on their ideas of the divine as one, many, or simultaneously singular and plural. The five essays, written by J. Baines, S. Parpola, S.A. Geller, H.S. Versnel, and B.N. Porter, address topics such as the advantages and disadvantages of monotheism and polytheism, how "god" or "the gods" were imagined in each of these ancient societies, and the usefulness of various concepts of god in developing models of the cosmos and its workings, adapting to social change, or coping with illness and suffering.

The Oral Tradition of Yangzhou Storytelling (Nordic Institute of Asian Studies, 73)
Published in Hardcover by Curzon Press (July, 1996)
Authors: Vibeke Bordahl and Vibeke B2rdahl
Average review score:

Excellent study of a local style of storytelling in China
This is a scholarly work on a style of local professional storytelling in China. The city of Yangzhou lies in the delta of the Yangzi River in eastern China. It was once the center of the salt trade and was a hub of the canal networks that connected north and south China in imperial times. Professional storytellers have been active in the area for several hundred years and a local style of storytelling known as Yangzhou pinghua gradually developed. Similar styles are found in other regional cities, particularly Suzhou and Shanghai. Stories are told in story houses where patrons, usually older men, gather daily to listen to episodes of the lengthy tales, often stories of heroes from Chinese history. A popular story is that of Wu Song, who killed a tiger with his bare hands after drinking in a local tavern at the foot of a mountain. Such tales often take weeks or even months to complete and are a mixture of conflict, humor, and interesting asides. Bordahl has thoroughly researched the Yangzhou tradition and supplies the reader with a historical overview of Chinese storytelling, an analysis of the speaking styles in Yangzhou storytelling, and a number of careful translations of select episodes in the Wu Song story cycle. Book-length studies of local styles of Chinese oral tradition are still rarities and the attention given the Yangzhou style is well-deserved and well-executed. While written primarily as a scholarly study, certain parts of the work could inform classroom studies of Chinese folklore and oral performance for younger students. The volume is very well printed on glossy paper with excellent black and white photos of contemporary storytellers.

Origin of Rus (Monograph Series (Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute).)
Published in Hardcover by Harvard Ukrainian (April, 1982)
Author: Omeljan Pritsak
Average review score:

Pritsak gives a very detailed, but understandable account
Volume I of Omeljan Pritsak's "Origin's of Rus" is a wonderful reference for anyone who wants detailed information on Ukraine/Russia in the 9th to 13th centuries. Volume I concentrates on the Scandinavian sources (other than the sagas), so it's obviously concentrating on the Rus dealings with the Vikings. The preface says that the next six volumes will focus on other sources -- the Scandinavian sagas, the Arab sources, etc. I've never been able to find these volumes, but I look forward to them if they're as informative as this one. For example -- I have never seen other documentation showing that Mstislav the Brave had a son (Eustaxij).

Orthopedic Neurology Words and Phrases

Paid for itself the first day I used it!
This book is great! It has every word you could possibly need for ortho work. What I really liked were all the rheumatology words (hard to find a book on). The second edition was just released so it is up-to-date. Another plus to the book is a handy list in the back of bones, muscles, and nerves, with both the common and proper names of each.

Our New Clothes: Acquisitions of the 1990s
Published in Hardcover by Metropolitan Books (April, 1999)
Author: Richard Martin

highlights from the Met costume collection
The Metropolitan Museum in New York has one of the world's great textile and costume collections. This book celebrates the new acquisitions of the costume collection throughout the 1990's.

This is essentially a picture book that is a recommended addition to anyone who collects books on costume. All illustrations are in colour and there are some lovely photos of items like an English Mantua and petticoat c1708, a hand painted robe a la francaise c1740, an embroidered robe a la polonaise c1780, a man's wool suit with gold bullion braid c1760 and more modern gowns such as dresses by Vivienne Westwood and Christian Lacroix as well as 2 gowns owned by Princess Diana.

A visually beautiful book that makes you glad that such wonderful costumes have been preserved and published so we can all enjoy them even if we can't visit the museum.

A Passion for Glass: The Aviva and Jack A. Robinson Studio Glass Collection
Published in Paperback by Detroit Inst of Arts (October, 1998)
Authors: Bonita Fike and Detroit Institute of Arts
Average review score:

A celebration of a brittle subject
This is a beautifully printed book for those who want to see the best in contemporary studio glass. The seventy eight works shown were donated to the Detroit Institute of Arts by Aviva and Jack Robinson. Bonita Fike contributes a short essay on studio glass from the sixties.

Considering how fragile glass it is amazing how these artists create such wonderful shapes and textures. I love the vase by Stephen Powell (page 61) and the Karl Schantz's colorful 'Urban Rainbow' (page68) made from vitrolite glass.

The back of the book includes a comprehensive artists biography and book list.
